Maryland medical license reinstatement application

The biennial license renewal period will begin on July 15, 2024, and end at 11:59 pm (EST) on September 30, 2024, for all physicians whose last name begins with the letter A-L and whose license expires on September 30, 2024.

A Criminal History Records Check (CHRC) is required for all applicants applying for initial licensure and reinstatement. A licensee who has previously submitted to a CHRC for the Board as part of an application for initial licensure, reinstatement, or renewal, will not be required to submit to a CHRC for the 2024‐2025 renewal cycle.

There will be a yes/no question on the renewal about whether a physician maintains medical liability insurance. The answer will be posted on the Practitioner Profiles. Practitioners can also edit their yes/no question within their profile.

Registration Deadline ‐ Practitioners who prescribe CDS must be registered with the PDMP in order to obtain a new or renewal CDS license. For more information, click PDMP Registration FAQs or visit the PDMP/Crisp Registration website.

The current annual license renewal fee for medical doctors (MDs) and doctors of osteopathic medicine (DOs) is $486*.

*This amount represents a fee reduction for all licensees from fiscal year 2022 through fiscal year 2025. The Board will pay the assessment fee to the Maryland Health Care Commission (MHCC) on behalf of the licensee through June 30, 2025. The rest of the amount includes renewal fee of $436.00 + physician rehabilitation and peer review program fee of $50.00.

Attention: The following instructions apply only to physicians who were issued an initial Maryland medical license through the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact (Compact). If you need clarification on whether this applies to you, please check the licensure pathway listed on your practitioner profile. Your profile will show "Compact" as the licensure pathway.

Two-part process to renew

As a Maryland physician licensed through the Compact process, you must complete a two-step license renewal process by 11:59 pm EST on September 30th:

CME Audit : You may be randomly selected for CME audit. If you receive a pop-up notice when you login in, you are required to send your CME documentation to the Board no later than 15 days after the license expiration date. Do not send CME documentation to the Board unless selected for audit. You can email, mail or fax your CME documentation to:

Physicians applying for renewal of the license must earn at least 50 Category 1 CME credits in the two-year period preceding the license expiration date. Physicians should not send CME documents to the Board unless selected for audit. (Note: The Board may impose a penalty of $100 per continuing medical education credit for failure to obtain the required continuing medical education credits.)

Physicians are exempt from the continuing education requirement for the first license renewal.
